How National 5 Maths Is Assessed
Two question papers, sat at the end of the course. There is no assignment and no coursework.

The course is graded A to D on the total mark across both papers. Grade C is described in the specification as successful performance; grade A as a consistently high level of performance.
The Numbers Most Revision Sites Still Get Wrong
Paper 1 is 40 marks in 1 hour, not 50 marks in 1 hour 15. The May 2023 revision of the course specification changed both the marks and the durations. Plenty of revision sites, printed guides and school handouts still carry the old figures, and a student practising to the wrong clock is practising the wrong exam.
It matters more than it sounds. Paper 1 now has 90 seconds per mark. Under the old structure it was the same ratio, but the paper was longer – so a student who has been doing 50-mark timed practice is building stamina for a paper that no longer exists, and may never have practised the actual pacing of the real one.
The other thing worth knowing: on 1 February 2026, Qualifications Scotland replaced SQA as Scotland’s national awarding body. The qualification is unchanged and existing past papers remain valid – only the name on the paperwork is different.

Where National 5 Marks Go
Paper 1 arithmetic
40 of the 90 marks are sat without a calculator. Students who have practised everything with one lose marks on fractions, surds and percentages rather than on the topic being tested.
Working not shown
Marks are awarded for method. An answer on its own scores nothing when the answer is wrong, and this is the most recoverable source of lost marks in the whole course.
Reasoning questions
Some questions carry marks for explaining or justifying rather than calculating. They are the questions students most often leave blank, and they are usually the most accessible marks on the paper.
Running out of time on Paper 2
50 marks in 90 minutes leaves less slack than it appears once the longer multi-step questions arrive. Timed practice on the current paper structure is the fix.
