Maths Tutors in Birmingham

Europe's largest local authority, and a city where one shared entrance test decides admission to six grammar schools at once.

Trial lessons are 50% off the normal rate.

Birmingham students sit GCSE Maths and A Level Maths, with AQA - itself headquartered in the city - along with Edexcel and OCR in use across schools. Birmingham retains selective state grammar schools, and the six King Edward VI grammars are entered through a single common entrance test rather than six separate ones, alongside other selective schools including Bishop Vesey's and Sutton Coldfield Girls. Math Wizard teaches across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, in person and online, following the specification a student is entered for.

One Test, Six Schools

The King Edward VI Foundation runs its six grammar schools through a single shared entrance assessment. A child sits one test and is considered by all of them in the order the family ranks. That is administratively kinder than the multi-test arrangements in some other selective areas, and it also concentrates a great deal of pressure into one morning in the autumn of Year 6.

Maths preparation for that test is a specific skill: speed, arithmetic security under time pressure, and problem types that do not appear in ordinary Year 5 classwork. It is short-term, finishes in the autumn, and should not be confused with the general number-confidence work a struggling primary child needs.

A Very Large Authority With Very Uneven Provision

Birmingham serves over a million residents through a single council, and its secondary landscape includes selective schools, large academy trusts, faith schools and sixth form colleges. Two students on the same bus route can be on different boards, in different post-sixteen structures, and sitting Further Maths or not depending entirely on whether their school runs it.

Further Maths is the one worth checking early. Where a school cannot fill a class it may not run the course at all, and a student who wants to read engineering or economics finds out too late to do much about it inside school.

Reaching Lessons Across Birmingham

In person. A tutor comes to the student's own desk, anywhere across the city and out into Solihull and Sutton Coldfield. Everything is worked on iPad and sent afterwards, so the student has a clean record of the session.

Online, same price. Birmingham is geographically large and the ring roads do not forgive a five o clock lesson. Online removes the travel entirely at the identical rate, over Zoom or Google Meet with shared notes.

No fixed slot. Sessions are an hour, times can move with 12 hours notice, and nothing is locked into a weekly pattern or a minimum package.

Who teaches your lessons

A maths specialist – someone who teaches maths and no other subject, works from the same worksheets you can read on this site, and follows the same method with every student.

You are told exactly who your tutor is before the first lesson, never after. That lesson is half price, with no contract, so if the match is not right you have lost one half-price hour and nothing else.

Fees in Birmingham

The same rate applies across the city and out into the wider West Midlands, in person or online.

The full breakdown, including how group lessons are made up and what the half-price first lesson covers, is on the maths tutor prices page.

1-to-1, in person or online £60–£80 per hour
Small group (5–6 students) £40 per student per hour
Trial lesson 50% off the normal rate

The rate depends on level – A Level and Advanced Higher sit at the upper end. There is no registration fee, no minimum package, and no charge for the worksheets or materials.

Most UK tutoring agencies quote you privately. Ours are above.

Maths Tutoring in Birmingham – Common Questions

For the maths paper, yes. The six King Edward VI grammars share one entrance assessment, so preparation is aimed at that paper rather than at a generic eleven-plus.
It varies by school - AQA, Edexcel and OCR are all used in the city. If you are unsure, the board is printed on any past paper the school has sent home.
That happens where numbers are low. Further Maths can be supported outside school, but it needs planning from Year 11 rather than a decision in September of Year 12.
Yes, in person across the wider West Midlands and online anywhere. Note that Sutton Coldfield sits inside Birmingham for admissions while Solihull is a separate authority.
