Which GCSE Maths Exam Board Is My Child Sitting?
Most tutoring sites say “we cover all boards” and stop there. Here is what actually differs, because a student who has practised for the wrong paper structure loses marks before they have done any maths.

The trap worth knowing about. On AQA and Edexcel the non-calculator paper is Paper 1. On OCR it is Paper 2. A student who walks into OCR’s Paper 2 expecting a calculator has lost marks that have nothing to do with whether they understand the maths.
Foundation or Higher Tier: Which Should My Child Sit?
Foundation tier is graded 1 to 5. Higher tier is graded 4 to 9. That single choice sets a ceiling on what a student can be awarded, whatever they do in the exam.
Entered too low
A student capable of a 6 or 7 who sits Foundation cannot be awarded more than a 5, no matter how well the paper goes. Schools sometimes enter cautiously to protect a pass.
Entered too high
A student pushed onto Higher who is not secure at grade 4 can end up scoring very few marks across three papers, when the same student would have been comfortable at Foundation.
It is worth checking that the tier is right in Year 10, not in March of Year 11 when entries are already in.

Where Are GCSE Maths Marks Actually Lost?
Not usually on the hardest question on the paper.
Method marks left on the table. A GCSE paper awards marks for correct method even when the final answer is wrong. A student who writes down nothing but an answer gets nothing when the answer is wrong – and this is the single most recoverable source of lost marks at GCSE.
Not reading what the command word asks. “Show that” requires the working, not the answer. “Give your answer to 3 significant figures” is a mark of its own. “Hence” means use the previous part, and doing it another way can score zero even if the answer is right.
Arithmetic on the non-calculator paper. A third of the assessment has no calculator, and students who have practised everything with one lose marks on long multiplication and fractions rather than on the topic being tested.
Topics that only ever appeared in homework. Recognising a topic in a chapter exercise is not the same as recognising it in a question that doesn’t say which topic it is. That gap only closes with real past papers.
