London students sit GCSE Maths at sixteen and A Level Maths at eighteen, entered through AQA, Edexcel, OCR or WJEC Eduqas depending on the school rather than the borough. A handful of outer boroughs - Bexley, Sutton, Kingston and Barnet among them - still run selective state grammars with their own entrance tests taken in Year 6, while most of inner London is fully comprehensive. Why the Borough Matters More Than the Postcode
London is not one school system. Each of the thirty-three boroughs is its own admissions authority, and a family two streets apart can be inside different ones. That has practical consequences for tutoring: a Year 5 child in Sutton or Bexley may be preparing for a selective entrance test in the autumn of Year 6, while a child the same age three miles away in Lambeth is not preparing for anything of the kind.
The same is true at sixteen. Some London students stay in a school sixth form of forty; others move to a sixth form college with a maths cohort in the hundreds. The maths is the same. The amount of individual attention is not, and that is usually what a parent is really buying when they look for a tutor.
Tutoring is Normal Here, Which Cuts Both Ways
Sutton Trust research puts the share of London secondary pupils who have had private tutoring at 45%, against 27% across the rest of England. In a lot of London classrooms, tutoring is simply what people do - which means the supply is enormous and the quality is uneven.
The filter worth applying is narrow: does this person teach maths only, and do they know which board your child is entered for? A generalist who covers five subjects and asks you to send the textbook is a different service from a maths specialist who already knows how Edexcel writes a Paper 3 question.

Getting To Lessons Across Greater London
In person. A tutor comes to the student's own desk. Across Greater London that is genuinely practical in most boroughs, but a cross-London journey in the late afternoon is nobody's friend - if the tutor who fits your child best is on the wrong side of the river, online is usually the better answer than a shorter list of tutors.
Online, same price. Over Zoom or Google Meet with shared digital notes, everything written during the session sent afterwards. Same rate as in person, so the choice is about logistics and nothing else.
Mixing the two. Most London families do - in person during term, online in exam season when a session needs moving at short notice. Day and time can change on request with 12 hours' notice, and there is no contract or minimum package.
Who teaches your lessons
A maths specialist – someone who teaches maths and no other subject, works from the same worksheets you can read on this site, and follows the same method with every student.
You are told exactly who your tutor is before the first lesson, never after. That lesson is half price, with no contract, so if the match is not right you have lost one half-price hour and nothing else.

The rate depends on level – A Level and Advanced Higher sit at the upper end. There is no registration fee, no minimum package, and no charge for the worksheets or materials.
