Maths Tutors in Edinburgh

Two school sectors of unusual size side by side, both leading to exactly the same national exams in exactly the same week.

Trial lessons are 50% off the normal rate.

Edinburgh students sit National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Maths, awarded by Qualifications Scotland since it replaced the SQA in 2026. The city has around twenty council secondaries alongside an independent sector that is unusually large by UK standards, and the two sectors often run different timetables - students can meet National 5 and Higher content at different points in S4 and S5 depending on the school. The qualifications and the exam diet are the same for all of them. Math Wizard teaches Scottish qualifications across Edinburgh, in person and online.

Different Pace, Same Paper

Presentation decisions in Scotland are made by the school. Some Edinburgh schools present strong pupils for National 5 early; others hold the whole year to the standard pattern. Some run Higher over two years for certain groups.

None of that changes what the national course asks for in May. It does change what a student has covered by any given month, which is why a tutor needs the school's own course plan rather than a generic year-by-year outline.

The Prelim Is the Real Signal

Scottish prelims sit in the winter and carry more diagnostic weight than a typical English mock, because the course is a single year and there is no second sitting to fall back on.

A disappointing prelim in Higher Maths is not a verdict, but it is a deadline. What is achievable between January and the exam depends almost entirely on whether the problem is a handful of topics or the underlying algebra, and that is the first thing worth establishing.

What Edinburgh Students Are Actually Sitting

Prelim results in and not what you hoped?

Send the paper or the topic breakdown and we will tell you honestly what the remaining months can do. The first lesson is half price.

In Person Across Edinburgh, or Online

In person. A tutor comes to the student's own desk across the city. Everything is worked on iPad and sent through afterwards.

Online, same price. Zoom or Google Meet with shared notes. Edinburgh evenings in the exam term are busy ones, and an online slot is easier to protect than a travelling one.

No lock-in. Hour-long sessions, rearrangeable with 12 hours notice, no contract and no minimum number of lessons.

Who teaches your lessons

A maths specialist – someone who teaches maths and no other subject, works from the same worksheets you can read on this site, and follows the same method with every student.

You are told exactly who your tutor is before the first lesson, never after. That lesson is half price, with no contract, so if the match is not right you have lost one half-price hour and nothing else.

Fees in Edinburgh

The rate is the same across the city and identical online, whichever sector the school sits in.

The full breakdown, including how group lessons are made up and what the half-price first lesson covers, is on the maths tutor prices page.

1-to-1, in person or online £60–£80 per hour
Small group (5–6 students) £40 per student per hour
Trial lesson 50% off the normal rate

The rate depends on level – A Level and Advanced Higher sit at the upper end. There is no registration fee, no minimum package, and no charge for the worksheets or materials.

Maths Tutoring in Edinburgh – Common Questions

Most sit the same Qualifications Scotland courses as the council schools, though a small number offer other routes. If in doubt, the qualification name on a report settles it.
That is a school decision and reasonably common. It compresses the timetable further, so it is worth keeping a close eye on fluency rather than assuming acceleration means security.
Yes. It is the level where independent study dominates, so lessons focus on tackling unfamiliar problems rather than reviewing taught content.
Before the prelim if possible. Starting after it is still worthwhile, but the work becomes triage rather than teaching.
