Maths Tutors in Newcastle

A compact city at the centre of a much wider Tyneside, with one long-standing source of confusion for families moving in.

Trial lessons are 50% off the normal rate.

Newcastle students sit GCSE Maths and A Level Maths, with AQA, Edexcel and OCR in use. Newcastle upon Tyne is comprehensive in its state sector, and Tyneside as a functional area extends across Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside, so school choice frequently crosses council boundaries. One local point of confusion: the Royal Grammar School Newcastle is an independent fee-paying school despite the name, and is not a state grammar. Math Wizard teaches across Newcastle and Tyneside in person and online.

The Grammar School That Is Not One

Families relocating to the North East regularly assume that the Royal Grammar School is a selective state school of the kind found in Kent or Buckinghamshire. It is independent and fee-paying, and its entrance process is its own.

Worth knowing before planning a year of eleven-plus preparation on a false premise. If an independent entrance exam is the actual goal, the maths preparation is different again from a state selective test - fewer speed drills, more unfamiliar problem structures.

One City, Four Councils Around It

Tyneside is administratively split several ways while functioning as one place. A student can live in Gateshead, attend school in Newcastle and sit A Levels in North Tyneside without anything unusual having happened.

For tutoring, that means the relevant question is never which council you are in. It is which school, which board, and which paper - and those are the three things worth having to hand before a first conversation.

In Person Across Tyneside, or Online

In person. A tutor comes to the student's desk in Newcastle, Gateshead and both sides of Tyneside. Work is done on iPad and sent afterwards.

Online, same price. Zoom or Google Meet with shared notes - the sensible answer for anyone out towards Northumberland where in-person availability is thinner.

No commitment. Hour-long sessions, movable with 12 hours notice, no contract and no minimum number of lessons.

Who teaches your lessons

A maths specialist – someone who teaches maths and no other subject, works from the same worksheets you can read on this site, and follows the same method with every student.

You are told exactly who your tutor is before the first lesson, never after. That lesson is half price, with no contract, so if the match is not right you have lost one half-price hour and nothing else.
