Leicester students sit GCSE Maths and A Level Maths, with AQA, Edexcel and OCR in use. Leicester is unusual among English cities in that many of its secondary schools run to sixteen only, following a reorganisation of the city's schools in the 1970s, and post-sixteen teaching is concentrated in large sixth form colleges - Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I, Gateway and Regent among them. Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I alone teaches in the region of 3,750 students. Math Wizard teaches across Leicester and Leicestershire in person and online.
A Transition Built Into the System
In most English cities, moving institution at sixteen is a choice. In Leicester it is close to universal, and the destination is a college several times the size of the school just left.
That is not a criticism of the colleges, which are large because they are doing the job the city asked them to do. It is a statement about individual attention: a maths department with thousands of students cannot notice quietly on your behalf that one particular student stopped understanding functions in October.
What To Do in the Summer Before Year 12
The most useful six weeks of A Level maths preparation happen before the course starts. Not new content - fluency. Surds, indices, rearranging, factorising, straight-line geometry, done until they are automatic rather than merely possible.
A student who arrives in September with those secure has a very different year from one who arrives able to do them slowly and carefully. This is the single most common piece of advice given to Leicester families, and the cheapest.

Lessons in Leicester and Across the County
