Maths Tutors in Scotland
National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher – taught as the Scottish courses they are, by tutors who know them.
Trial lessons are 50% off the normal rate.
Math Wizard teaches the three Scottish maths qualifications: National 5 (two papers, 90 marks), Higher (two papers, 120 marks) and Advanced Higher (two papers, 115 marks), all graded A to D by Qualifications Scotland, which replaced SQA as Scotland’s awarding body on 1 February 2026. Lessons run online anywhere in Scotland, or in person in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee. 1-to-1 costs £60–£80 per hour and small groups £40 per student per hour.
Scotland Does Not Sit GCSE or A Level
It sounds obvious, and it is the single most common failure of national tutoring services. A Scottish student searching for help is routinely offered GCSE material, English past papers, and grade targets written in 9–1 – none of which exists in their system.
The qualifications are different, the papers are different, the grading is different, and the calculus arrives at a different point. A tutor who teaches “the English syllabus, adapted” will be wrong about the paper structure, wrong about the timing, and wrong about what the examiner rewards.
National 5
Two papers, 90 marks. Paper 1 is non-calculator, 40 marks in one hour; Paper 2 is 50 marks in 1h30. Graded A–D, most commonly sat in S4. Full course breakdown →
Higher
Two papers, 120 marks. Paper 1 is non-calculator, 55 marks in 1h15; Paper 2 is 65 marks in 1h30. This is where calculus arrives and where university offers are written. Full course breakdown →
Advanced Higher
Two papers, 115 marks. Paper 1 is non-calculator, 35 marks in one hour; Paper 2 is 80 marks in 2h30. Proof, complex numbers, matrices and differential equations. Full course breakdown →
The 2023 change most sites missed
National 5 and Higher had their paper marks and durations amended in May 2023. Advanced Higher did not. Plenty of revision material still shows the old National 5 and Higher figures, which means students practising to the wrong clock.
Sitting National 5, Higher or Advanced Higher?
The first lesson works on real questions from your own course - not an English paper with the names changed - and tells you honestly where the marks are going. It is half price, with nothing to commit to.

Where We Teach in Scotland
In person in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee, and online anywhere in Scotland at the same price – which matters more here than elsewhere in the UK, because Advanced Higher classes in particular are often small, sometimes shared between schools, and occasionally not running at all.
Online lessons are worked through on iPad with shared digital notes, and whatever is written during the session is sent to the student afterwards.
Who teaches your lessons
A maths specialist – someone who teaches maths and no other subject, works from the same worksheets you can read on this site, and follows the same method with every student.
You are told exactly who your tutor is before the first lesson, never after. That lesson is half price, with no contract, so if the match is not right you have lost one half-price hour and nothing else.
Fees
| 1-to-1, in person or online | £60–£80 per hour |
| Small group (5–6 students) | £40 per student per hour |
| Trial lesson | 50% off the normal rate |
The rate depends on level – A Level and Advanced Higher sit at the upper end. There is no registration fee, no minimum package, and no charge for the worksheets or materials.
Most UK tutoring agencies quote you privately. Ours are above.

Where these facts come from
Every paper structure, mark total, timing and grade scale on this page was checked against the awarding body’s own published specification. Those documents are free, and they are the only source that is definitive – if anything here ever disagrees with one of them, the specification is right and this page is wrong.

Specifications are revised from time to time. Where a course has changed – the 2023 revision to National 5 and Higher, for example – this site follows the current version, which a good deal of older revision material still does not.
