Sheffield students sit GCSE Maths and A Level Maths, with AQA, Edexcel and OCR in use across the city's schools. Sheffield is comprehensive with no state grammar schools, and several of its secondaries have no sixth form, so a large proportion of students move to a college at sixteen for A Levels. Where a school runs to sixteen only, every student leaves at the same moment, and the A Level maths class they join is assembled from a dozen feeder schools with a dozen different GCSE experiences behind it.
Teachers in that position cannot backfill individually. They teach the course. A student whose surds or index laws were shaky at GCSE will not be found out by the class - they will be found out by the first assessment, and by then a term has gone.
Geography That Costs Time
Sheffield is built across seven hills and a national park boundary. A journey of four miles across the city in the late afternoon is not a fifteen-minute journey, and that is a real constraint on evening tutoring rather than a decorative fact about the city.
