Liverpool students sit GCSE Maths and A Level Maths under the English system, with AQA, Edexcel and OCR in use. Liverpool itself is largely comprehensive, with the notable exception of the Blue Coat School, a state school that selects by examination - unusual for the North West. Across the river, Wirral is a selective authority whose grammar schools run their own admissions testing, so some Liverpool city region families prepare for entrance tests even though their own borough has almost none. The River is a Real Boundary
The Mersey is not a line on a map, it is a tunnel or a ferry. That matters for anything selective: Wirral runs grammar schools with their own entrance assessments, and a family in south Liverpool considering them is committing to a daily crossing for seven years as well as a test in Year 6.
It also matters for tutoring logistics. An in-person tutor based on the wrong side of the water is an unreliable arrangement in winter, and this is one of the clearest cases anywhere in the country for simply doing the lessons online instead.
A City Region, Not Just a City
Liverpool's secondary intake reaches well beyond the city boundary into Knowsley, Sefton, Halton and Wirral. Families choose across those lines routinely, which means a single street can send children to schools run by four different authorities on three different exam boards.
The practical advice is unglamorous: find out which board your child is entered for before buying any revision guide. Half the wasted money in GCSE maths preparation is spent on materials for the wrong specification.

In Person or Online Around Merseyside
In person. A tutor comes to the student's desk across Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley and Halton. Work is done on iPad and sent afterwards, so nothing rests on a tired student copying it down correctly.
Online, same price. Genuinely the better option for anything that would involve a tunnel crossing at rush hour. Zoom or Google Meet, shared notes, identical rate to in person.
Nothing locked in. Hour-long sessions, times movable with 12 hours notice, no contract and no minimum number of lessons.
