Math Wizard teaches A Level maths across the United Kingdom for AQA (7357), Pearson Edexcel (9MA0) and OCR Mathematics A (H240). All three are assessed by three papers of two hours and 100 marks each, taken at the end of the course, with a calculator permitted on every paper. 1-to-1 lessons cost £60–£80 per hour and small groups of five or six cost £40 per student per hour, online anywhere in the UK or in person in 17 cities.
Why Do Students Who Got a 9 at GCSE Struggle at A Level?
It sounds like a contradiction to parents, and it is the single most common story behind an A Level maths enquiry.
GCSE maths rewards recognising a method and applying it. The question usually tells you, in effect, which technique it wants. A strong student can score highly by knowing a set of procedures very well.
A Level rewards something different: choosing between methods, and justifying the choice. A question no longer announces its topic. Integration by parts or by substitution? Is this a trigonometry problem or a calculus one? Nothing on the page says.
So the student who was best at memorising is often the one who hits the wall first, usually around November of Year 12. More practice of the same kind does not fix it. Changing how they approach an unseen question does.

How Is A Level Maths Assessed?
A Level maths content is prescribed by the Department for Education and is common to every board – there is no such thing as an easier syllabus. What differs is how the three papers are arranged, and that changes how a student should revise.

Why it matters in the exam hall. An Edexcel student meets Statistics and Mechanics together in one paper and has to switch between them. An AQA student meets Mechanics on Paper 2 and Statistics on Paper 3; an OCR student meets them the other way round. A student revising from generic “A Level maths” material is preparing for a paper nobody actually sits.
A Level Further Maths
Further Maths is where the boards genuinely diverge, because unlike A Level Maths it has optional content – two students on the same board can be sitting different papers.
AQA 7367
Three papers of two hours and 100 marks. Papers 1 and 2 are compulsory core; Paper 3 carries the options, and students take two of Mechanics, Statistics and Discrete.
Edexcel 9FM0
Four papers of 1h30 and 75 marks. Core Pure 1 and 2 are compulsory, then two optional papers chosen from eight – Further Pure, Further Statistics, Further Mechanics and Decision.
OCR H245
Four papers of 1h30 and 75 marks. Pure Core 1 and 2 are mandatory, plus any two of Statistics, Mechanics, Discrete and Additional Pure.
The first thing worth establishing in a Further Maths enquiry is which optional papers the school has entered the student for – it is surprisingly often the one thing nobody at home knows.

How Much Does an A Level Maths Tutor Cost?
1-to-1 A Level maths tuition costs £60–£80 per hour, and small group classes £40 per student per hour for groups of five or six. A Level and Further Maths sit at the upper end of the 1-to-1 range.

The rate depends on level – A Level and Advanced Higher sit at the upper end. There is no registration fee, no minimum package, and no charge for the worksheets or materials.
